Over the last few years, technology has shifted dramatically. Today, tools powered by artificial intelligence allow clients to visualize concepts, mix elements, and experiment with imagery in seconds. For many people stepping into the studio, AI has become a fascinating starting point to bring an abstract idea into something concrete.

And honestly? As an artist, I think that’s great.

When someone walks into the studio with an AI-generated mockup, it gives me an instant look inside their head. It shows me the vibe they’re chasing, the mood, and the general direction. But as someone who has dedicated years to mastering realism, there is a fundamental truth we always have to keep in mind: paper, screens, and skin are entirely different worlds.

AI is a beast at generating epic lighting, endless details, and massive compositions. But an algorithm doesn’t know how human skin actually lives, breathes, and ages.

What looks super crisp and sharp on a bright phone screen can easily turn into a muddy blur once it wraps around a moving muscle or a curvy thigh. Realism isn’t just about copying a cool picture, it’s about engineering a piece that’s going to look clean and powerful for years down the road.

That is where my job begins.

Guiding the vision with caution and moderation

When someone brings an AI concept to me, we use it as a foundation—never as a strict rule.

Most of the time, we have to tweak things, scale back the clutter, punch up the contrast, or strip away elements that are just too small to survive on skin. For instance, an AI might spit out a hyper-detailed portrait packed with microscopic textures and tiny, competing background details. If we copy-paste that directly onto the body, time and healing will just mush it all together.

Realism requires hierarchy. There has to be a clear protagonist—whether it’s a fierce wildlife portrait or a symbolic figure and the surrounding elements must support it, not fight it. Moderation in design is what keeps a tattoo legible and powerful years down the line.

Your body deserves a piece built to last, not just something that looks impressive under studio ring lights for an Instagram photo.

Using AI tools to explore ideas is a fantastic modern luxury. It breaks down the fear of the blank page and helps us speak the same language during the consultation process. But translating a digital prompt into living, breathing skin requires human experience, anatomical understanding, and artistic judgment.

Technology gives us the spark, but the craft gives it life.

When you book a session with me, you don’t just get a replica of a digital file. You get a custom piece adapted specifically to your anatomy, your flow, and your story.

Bring your ideas, your mood boards, and your AI explorations to the table. Let’s look at them together, figure out what works best for your body, and turn that digital vision into a timeless piece of art.

Attach a photo of the placement area, add the following text, and simply edit the last section (“MY IDEA”) according to what you want:

One important note about this: the picture must be just of the area where you want the tattoo. For example, if you’d like your chest as the placement area, do not upload a full torso picture, as the AI doesn’t handle this very well.

PROMPT:

I want to visualize a tattoo idea on my own body before meeting with my tattoo artist, Jose Contreras.

I have uploaded a photo of the area of my body where I am considering the tattoo. Use my uploaded photo as the placement reference.

Create a realistic BLACK & GREY tattoo concept preview directly on the photographed area.

IMPORTANT: This is a CONCEPT AND PLACEMENT PREVIEW, not a finished or tattoo-ready design. The goal is to help me explore the idea, approximate scale, placement, visual flow and overall feeling of the tattoo.

PLACEMENT & BODY FLOW:

* Keep the original body and photograph unchanged.
* Place the concept only within the requested tattoo area.
* Respect the natural anatomy, direction and shape of the body part.
* Scale the main subject so it is clearly readable and visually strong.
* Allow the composition to follow the natural flow of the body rather than forcing it into a rectangular shape.
* Do not extend the tattoo into unrelated areas of the body unless requested.

VISUAL STYLE:

* Black and grey realism.
* Sophisticated, clean and timeless.
* Strong main focal point.
* Realistic anatomy and proportions.
* Clear separation between the main subject and supporting elements.
* Controlled contrast with readable areas of light, midtones and dark values.
* Secondary elements should remain visually subordinate to the main subject.
* Use negative space when appropriate.
* Keep backgrounds atmospheric and relatively simple.
* Avoid excessive micro-detail.
* Avoid random textures, unnecessary ornaments or decorative elements generated simply to fill empty space.
* Avoid an overly busy or obviously AI-generated appearance.

The concept should look believable enough for me to understand how the idea could work on my body, while remaining clearly an early visualization that a professional tattoo artist would later redesign, refine and adapt specifically for my anatomy, skin and final tattoo.

Do not add elements that I did not request simply to make the composition more complex.

[Example: Realistic Tiger]
