How to Take Care of Your Tattoo So It Looks Amazing for Years to Come by Jose Contreras

A great tattoo doesn’t end when you leave the studio. The way it looks, heals, and ages over time depends just as much on how you care for it as it does on the artist’s technique.

After nearly two decades tattooing, I’ve learned this: how you care for your tattoo reflects the same intention with which you chose it. If you’re going to wear it for life, it’s worth a few days of intentional care to help it heal properly and stay vibrant for years.

The First Days: Where It All Starts

- The First Days: Where It All Starts

The first 7 to 10 days are when your skin is in full regeneration mode. This is when your attention matters most:

•Follow the specific instructions I give you after your session. They’re based on your skin type and the piece we worked on.
•Wash the tattoo gently using a fragrance free, neutral soap. Pat dry never rub.
•Use only the products I recommend. No random creams, DIY tricks, or over the counter fixes they can interfere with healing or alter the look of your tattoo.

You might feel some mild itching or sensitivity that’s totally normal. Don’t scratch. Don’t rub. Let your skin do what it knows how to do.

- Your Health Plays a Big Role Too

A tattoo might heal poorly because of improper external care but it can also be due to what’s going on inside your body.

•Keep your immune system strong.
•Drink high quality water every day, ideally mineral water.
•Eat a balanced, nourishing diet and avoid inflammatory foods.

If you have gluten sensitivity like I do, you probably know that systemic inflammation can even affect how your skin heals. Supporting your body is part of supporting your tattoo.

- The Sun: Your Tattoo’s Silent Enemy

Excessive sun exposure is one of the biggest reasons tattoos fade over time. UV rays break down ink, dry out the skin, and wear away detail.

•Avoid direct sun completely during the first few weeks.
•Once healed, use sunscreen daily no exceptions.
•Go for a high quality SPF 30+ product, preferably with physical (mineral) filters like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

This isn’t being dramatic it’s long-term care.

- What If It Needs a Touch-Up?

My technique is designed for smooth, even healing but sometimes, the location of the tattoo or constant skin movement can affect how it settles.

If anything doesn’t heal the way you expected, message me. I’ll take a look and we’ll decide together if a touch-up is needed. For me, your tattoo doesn’t end when you walk out the door.

- A Well-Cared-For Tattoo Is a Living Work of Art

When you decide to get tattooed by me, you’re trusting in my technique, experience, and the way I translate your story onto skin. But the final outcome is something we create together.

My part is to give you a clean, intentional, meaningful piece. Your part is to care for it with attention. That’s the difference between a tattoo that fades and one that lives on beautifully.
