Each reference is evaluated individually to determine how much usable information can be recovered without changing the pet’s distinctive features. If the photograph is especially important to you, send the best original version available rather than editing or enlarging it yourself.
There is no single ideal size. The right size depends on the placement, your pet’s features, the amount of detail in the reference photograph, and how the portrait needs to age over time.
Some portraits can work beautifully at a smaller scale, while photographs with complex fur, markings, wrinkles, or other distinctive details may benefit from additional space. Jose evaluates the final size and placement with each client individually to preserve the likeness, readability, and detail of the portrait over time.
Flatter areas of the body generally provide an excellent canvas for realistic pet portraits. One of Jose’s preferred placements is the inner forearm, where the portrait can sit naturally, remain highly visible, and be easily appreciated by both the client and others.
The inner bicep and areas of the leg can also work beautifully depending on the size and composition. Every body is different, so final placement is evaluated together with Jose to determine where the portrait will fit and flow best with your anatomy.
Yes. Multiple pets can be incorporated into a single composition, but the appropriate size and number of sessions will depend on the level of detail, placement, and reference photographs.
In some cases, two smaller portraits can be completed within one session. For larger or more detailed portraits, a single pet may require a full session. Each multi-pet project is evaluated individually so that reducing the size does not compromise the likeness or detail of either animal.
The time required depends on the size, placement, reference photograph, and complexity of your pet’s features. Fur texture, markings, wrinkles, eyes, and subtle tonal variations can make even a relatively small portrait surprisingly detailed.

Now based in Austin, Texas, Jose is placing a particular focus on hyperrealistic pet portraits creating highly personal pieces designed to preserve the distinctive likeness, expression and character of each animal.
